 Abstract:  Court documents and media reports relating to a dispute between Rainer W. G. Gruessner MD and the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson, Arizona Board of Regents, University of Arizona Health Network, University Physicians Healthcare. Dr. Gruessner was, at the time, the head of UA College of Medicine Department of Surgery. One of the other players in this dispute was the then dean of the UA College of Medicine - Tucson, Steve Goldschmid MD. What makes this dispute particularly interesting is that the UA College of Medicine in its infancy also endured an intense and lengthy controversy between its founding dean, Merlin K. DuVal MD, and its first head of the Department of Surgery, Erle E. Peacock, Jr., MD.

 Abstract:  Dr. Augusto Ortiz lived and worked in Arizona most of his professional life from 1953 until his death in 2006. Throughout his career as a family practitioner and educator he worked to bring health care to the poor and underserved. In his earlier years he worked in private practice in the Phoenix area primarily serving a needy Hispanic population. In 1972 Dr. Ortiz moved to Tucson and established a mobile health program based out of the University of Arizona’s Rural Health Office which provided health care to many rural and underserved areas in southeastern Arizona. Areas of particular interest to him included community oriented primary care, migrant laborer health care, health education and folk medicine including herbal folk remedies and curanderismo. This collection contains Ortiz correspondence from over a 35-year period (1969-2004) as well as documents corresponding to each of the topics mentioned above including extensive documentation relating to the Mobile Health Program. The collection also includes Dr. Ortiz’s U.S. Surgeon General Medallion.

 Abstract:  George Blier was a histotechnologist who was stationed at the U.S. Army 361st Station Hospital in Toyko, Japan from about 1947-1948. There he established and ran what was at the time the largest medical laboratory in the Far East. Returning to the United States he worked as a histotechnologist in various locations. He was a founding member of the National Society for Histotechnology. The collection contains laboratory procedures manuals dating from his time in Tokyo at the 361st Station Hospital (1947-1948) and also some papers papers relating to the National Society for Histotechnology (mainly 1977-1978).

The collection contains a holograph, carbon letter book covering the period December 1, 1871 to March 21, 1875. Letters are from Stout chiefly to his superiors and benefactors back east and describe the needs and conditions of the people and the reservation school.
